After 20 + years of blood tests on patients we find that 80-90% of patients are deficient in Vitamin D. How can that be when our milk & other food items are fortified with Vitamin D ? Obviously that is not enough to do the job.
When the sun hits your skin it causes a chemical reaction & your body produces Vit.D. Before the advent of modern society our ancestors spent their lives framing & working outside & had plenty of sun exposure.
Now days very few people have jobs that are outside unless they get paid as a Pro-Surfer or something ! (we wish). The rest of us work mostly inside & never see the light of day except maybe on the week end. And if you live in a colder climate like Utah you have winter 6 months of the year.
The other problem is that too much sun exposure causes your skin to age prematurely & can result in skin cancer. So to protect ourselves we use Sun Screen which protects our skin but also prevents the production of Vitamin D.
The best answer we have found is to supplement your diet with Vitamin D. Blood test help us to know what dosage is needed for each patient. The normal range is considered to be from 30-100 ng/mL, however OPTIMAL is between 50-80 ng/mL.
WHAT DISEASES ARE ASSOCIATED WITH VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY ? 75% greater risk of colon cancer, osteoporosis, joint & back pain, depression, diabetes, schizophrenia, migraines, autoimmune diseases ( lupus, scleroderma ), allergies, preeclampsia, inflammation, increased risk of heart attack, high blood pressure, MS etc.
Because there are so many serious diseases associated Vitamin D deficiency, when we order blood tests on our patients, we always include Vitamin D. Next time your in our office, ask us to order a blood test for you. Most insurances cover blood work 100%.
